“There is a Season” is something I had been writing, off and on, for a long time. I had written a few of the essays and didn’t know exactly what the final product was going to be—long, short, personal essay, fiction? I knew one of them had to be from early in my life, if it was going to be a kind of autobiography. But I also have a terrible memory, so the three-quarters true thing really freed me up to write the first one, and then it started to feel more like an autobiography, or more autobiographical, I should say. Writing three quarters true was perfect for this piece, and I finished it with 3QR specifically in mind.
